Have You Ever Wondered How Perception Affects Reality?

Our perception of something is our interpretation or understanding of a situation, person, or thing. Perspective is our point of view, what we believe something means and results in how we see ourselves, others, and everything around us.

Perception is reality - handwriting on a napkin with a cup of coffee.

Perception, perspective, reality…sometimes it’s just not black and white.


It’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see”. ‒Henry David Thoreau

Regardless of what we see and what it makes us believe, each of us is interpreting different things making it difficult at times to know what reality may be.


How can we gain clarity on what is? Mindfulness and heedfulness can be helpful.


When we’re mindful we’re paying attention to our emotional and physical senses, and what we feel. Heedfulness is also important so we pay attention to others and how they feel, as well.


“When you look at a field of dandelions, you can either see a hundred weeds or a hundred wishes…” ‒ unknown

If our perceptions reflect a negative bias “a hundred weeds”, “we may be filtering out the positive aspects of a situation, while magnifying the negative and imagining the absolute worst” (Compassionate Integrity Training, Life University 2020).


Sometimes there may not be an absolute right or wrong answer and the confusion might cause a cloudy image of what seems real.


So, when you’re not certain what you see, how might you want to focus attention and awareness on figuring it out?


Have you ever considered alternative views of a situation and found yourself changing your mind about it?

What’s your perspective when considering planning some “ME” time?


How might you want to enjoy that “ME” time experience without uncertainty when others perceive it differently than you do?


When we’re mindful and heedful about scheduling some of that “ME” time, others can benefit in a variety of ways and that can positively affect everyone’s understanding of it.
