In Part 1, Values of this article series, we examined values and their fundamental role in guiding lives. The second installment in the series, Part 2, Fulfillment, defined fulfillment on a deeper level, highlighting life purpose and how to live and express lives more fully on a resonating and sustainable path.

Along that path, dissonance presents a challenge and may contradict value and derail fulfillment, hindering continued growth. Often, this obstacle comes from within as a natural part of the self. We all have a saboteur, which keeps us playing safe and small. This inner sabotage is a natural part of any person and requires observation, understanding, and integration. Combating the saboteur can be dangerous because it will only put off further understanding of self and purpose, taking us off-road from our planned journey.

So, how do you get acquainted with the saboteur? Embracing that a saboteur is a natural occurrence for everyone is the most authentic place to start. Circumstances often feel overwhelming, and self-sabotage can impact even the most resilient person. It sounds like:

  • I am not enough;

  • I am too much;

  • I should be further along;

  • I do not have what it takes; or

  • I am too old to start over or try something new

These untruths demonstrate our sense of fear being more potent than our desired fulfillment. These untruths keep us playing safe and small under the guise of protection. Protection from danger, rejection, loss, or perceived risk. This dissonance quietly influences choices not aligned with value or living fulfilled.

Substituting truth for untruth releases affirmation that can be used to realign with values and rediscover

fulfillment. Substituting truths sounds like:

  • I am enough;

  • I am authentically me;

  • I am right where I need to be;

  • I am qualified; or

  • I will never regret learning something new

Facing the saboteur head-on with curiosity allows one to observe and understand its limits and negative impact. Integrating the saboteur instead of combating it provides a rich opportunity to turn a menace into a golden opportunity. The saboteur can be used to motivate value alignment and consistently pursue a fulfilled life. Understanding and maintaining varying perspectives on the saboteur supports creating connections between thoughts and actions and lessens the overwhelming limits that can occur.

If you are ready to start your journey or are already down the path of becoming the next best version of yourself, revisit the first two articles in this three-part series titled Top Three Considerations When

Leveling Up to ensure you are aligned with your values and living the fulfilling life that resonates with
